When we hear the word surrender, most of us instinctively resist it.

Surrender can sound weak, unsafe, or even losing. We want to protect ourselves, manage outcomes, and keep control over our lives. But in John 10, Jesus describes Himself as both the Shepherd and the Door for the sheep. He is not trying to take life from us. He is leading us into life.

Jesus says the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy—but He came so we could have life abundantly. The tension is that abundant life often begins where control ends.

This conversation is about honestly asking ourselves: Why is trusting Jesus so difficult sometimes? And what happens when we choose trust over control?

Opening Prayer

God, thank You for bringing us together tonight.
Help us be honest about the areas where we struggle to trust You.
Give us wisdom, humility, and courage as we talk together.
Teach us to surrender the things we keep trying to control.
Amen.

Why do you think surrender feels uncomfortable for most people?

Scripture

John 10:7–10 (NIV)

“Therefore Jesus said again, ‘Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.’”

Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.”
