What Really Happened to Jesus on the Cross?
The crucifixion of Jesus is one of the most well-known events in history.
But what actually happened?
Was it symbolic, or was it something real and physical?
The crucifixion of Jesus is one of the most well-known events in history.
But what actually happened?
Was it symbolic, or was it something real and physical?
Crucifixion was a Roman method of execution designed to maximize suffering and publicly shame the victim.
It was not quick. It was not private.
It was meant to be seen, and it was meant to break a person completely.
Before Jesus was placed on the cross, He was beaten and scourged with a whip designed to tear into the skin.
By the time He reached the cross, His body was already severely damaged.
He was physically exhausted before the crucifixion even began.
Jesus was nailed through His wrists and feet.
The position of His body made breathing extremely difficult.
To breathe, He would have to push up against the nails and then collapse again, repeating this over and over.
Many victims of crucifixion died from exhaustion, shock, or the inability to breathe.
It was a slow death.
Every breath came at a cost.
In the Gospel of John, a soldier pierces Jesus’ side and blood and water flow out.
This aligns with what we would expect from severe trauma.
This was not symbolic suffering.
It was real.
If the crucifixion really happened, then the question becomes why.
Why would Jesus willingly endure this?
The Bible teaches that Jesus chose to give His life out of love.
He took on sin and brokenness so that we could be restored to God.
That moves this from a historical question to a personal one.
If this is true, what do we do with that kind of love?
This is not just something to understand.
It is something to respond to.
