Most of us naturally move toward whatever feels secure. A stable job. Financial comfort. Approval from people around us. Habits that make us feel in control. None of those things seem dangerous at first—but sometimes the very things that feel safest can quietly pull us away from trusting Jesus.
That’s the tension Jesus exposes in John 10.
He describes thieves, hired hands, and Himself as the Good Shepherd. The thief offers false comfort that ultimately steals life from us. The hired hand looks dependable until things get difficult. But Jesus is different. He stays. He protects. He leads. He lays down His life for His people.
The hard part is that sin and misplaced trust rarely look destructive in the beginning. They usually look comforting. Convenient. Reasonable. Safe.
That’s why it can be easy to follow voices that promise peace but leave us restless.
Maybe for you it’s chasing control.
Maybe it’s living for success or security.
Maybe it’s numbing stress instead of facing it.
Maybe it’s trusting yourself more than God.
Jesus doesn’t shame us for wandering. He pursues us.
The image of the Good Shepherd is deeply personal. Jesus says, “I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” That means you are not invisible to God. He knows your fears, your struggles, your questions, and the things you try to hide behind.
And still, He calls you closer.
The challenge this message leaves us with is simple but honest:
What’s leading me right now?
Because whatever leads us will eventually shape us.
Some voices only take from us.
Some things only stay until life gets hard.
But Jesus leads toward life, peace, and something lasting.
If this stirred something in you, don’t ignore it.
Take a moment to reflect this week—or join us Sunday as we continue following Jesus together here in Tallahassee.
